Located conveniently on base at Flugplatz 117 in Spangdahlem, Deutsche Kantine is a charming gem for anyone craving authentic German cuisine paired with unbeatable value. This cozy restaurant excels in delivering classic dishes that showcase the hearty, comforting flavors Germany is known for, all served in a relaxed and friendly environment that feels like a true local favorite.
Early birds will appreciate that Deutsche Kantine opens bright and early at 7:00 AM, making it a perfect stop for breakfast. Patrons like C Varty rave about their schnitzel sandwich paired with a flaky pastry and a satisfying breakfast sandwich—each bite offering a delightful balance of rich, savory flavors and fresh, baked goodness. This spot truly nails the art of affordable, delicious morning fare to fuel your day.
For lunch enthusiasts, the menu boasts standout dishes such as the Schweinekotelett (pork steak) served with mushrooms and perfectly seasoned home fries—a harmonious marriage of tender, juicy meat and crispy, flavorful sides. Bill Raddatz highlights just how tender and moist the pork steak remains, complemented beautifully by a side salad dressed with care and a light touch. The German classics here come alive with rich, authentic tastes that transport you straight to a traditional kitchen, yet the portions remain generous enough to satisfy any appetite.
Deutsche Kantine also impresses with its daily specials, rotating thoughtfully to offer variety and cater to different tastes—including occasional vegetarian options. Ryan Black and Patrick J. Peake commend the restaurant for delivering generous portions and consistently tasty meals that outshine many fast food alternatives nearby, all at pocket-friendly prices. The atmosphere at Deutsche Kantine is unpretentious and welcoming, with friendly service that further enhances the dining experience without any fuss.
One important detail for visitors to note is that payment is cash-only in Euros, so come prepared. But this minor caveat is easily overshadowed by the authentic tastes and homely vibe you’ll find inside.
Whether you’re in need of a quick, satisfying breakfast, a comforting lunch break, or simply a taste of German culinary tradition on base, Deutsche Kantine stands out as a must-visit. Its combination of flavor, affordability, and warm service makes every meal here feel like a small celebration of good food done just right.

Great little spot on Spangdahlem that opens at 0700! About a 10 min walk from bldg 38 (Old Lodging). But worth it.. grabbed a Schnitzel sandwich, a pastry and a breakfast sandwich. All of them were fantastic and cheap!

Exceptional. The Schweinekotelett or pork steak with mushrooms and home-fries was delicious. The meat was tender and barely dry. The home-fries were pleasantly seasoned and not mushy. I enjoyed the dressing on the side salad as well. I wouldn't hesitate to eat here again and try another dish! As far as I could tell it seems the Kantine accepts Euros only, no card, no dollars. There's a Community Bank (BofA) ATM near the library and chow hall.

Really good food at really good prices, if you’re looking to grab some lunch, you’re getting a better meal for the same price as any fast food nearby. Would recommend.

Decent German restaurant serving many typical German dishes and other local cuisine. They have three daily specials costing 5,40, 6,90, and 7,80 Euro respectively. Some of the daily specials are vegetarian, however there is no guarantee that there will be a vegetarian option on any given day. The schnitzel is decent, but pretty average comparatively, also, if you order a daily special, the food will come out very quickly. They often have daily specials that aren't on their weekly menu, which they post to their fb page.

Regularly hitting this place us for lunch is a great option on base. Can't read the menu ever so I only ever get one of the daily specials. Still worth it.
